"The people of the Water Tribe are capable of adapting to many things. They have a deep sense of community and love that holds them together through anything." - General Iroh
The Water Tribe is a collective term for the nation of people who practice the art of waterbending. It is one of the original Four Nations and its people inhabit the North and South Pole, as well as a small group of people that live in the foggy swamp.
Origin:
Much like the other original four nations, the Water Tribe comes from the era of Raava. Predecessors of the Water Tribe received the element of water from the lion turtles with the skill of Energybending. They could request the ability anytime they traveled into the spirit wilds for resources. Once the lion turtles renounced their roles as protectors of mankind, the Water Tribe headed to settle in the North Pole, despite the fact most of the settlements before were tropical. Several aspects of the life and observances practiced by the predecessors of the Water Tribe became a part of the nation’s culture, such as their dependence on water for sustenance. Furthermore, the implementation of blue dome-like structures still remains as an integral part of Water Tribe architecture. Eventually the tribes relocated to the North Pole and formed several independent tribes. These tribes were later formed together by a group of waterbenders that used the skill to build the capital, which sparked civil unrest, causing a group of them to leave and form a new tribe in the South, forever dividing them into two.
Government:
System: Tribal Chiefdom
Head Of State/Government: Tribal Chief
Current Chiefs:
Northern Chieftan: Chieftain Arriak
Southern Tribe: Chieftain Unnuk
National Emblem:
The national emblem of the Water Tribe is a circle comprised of a crescent moon and three wavy horizontal lines representing ocean water. The Emblem represents the relationship between the Moon and Ocean spirits, who exist in perfect harmony with each other. The Water Tribe’s belief in peaceful cooperation between nations comes from these two spirits. It is common in the architecture of the Northern Water Tribe, and there is a small emblem of it on the Southern Tribe’s watch tower. However, the Foggy Swamp Tribe, do not have a recorded emblem because of lack of communication with the other tribes.
Culture:
The appearance of the Water Tribe is based on its corresponding element, Water. Each nation has its own elemental colour, which, in this case, is blue. The Foggy Swamp tribe is an exception, as they tend to wear green due to their affinity with plants.
The Water Tribe is split into three groups primarily based on their geographical placement. The Southern tribe occupies the south pole. The Northern Tribe consists of the majority of the official remnants of their civilization. The two tribe remain in close contact and come together during the new moon, justly called the “New Moon Celebration.” The Foggy Swamp tribe, remain in their part of the Earth Kingdom, with little contact with the other tribes.
When they turn fourteen, Southern Water Tribe children are taken on a rite of passage known as “Ice Dodging” where they must control a ship in turbulent water riddle with large, haphazard chunks of ice. After completing the ritual, they are given one of three marks of honour: Mark of the Brave, Mark of the Wise, and Mark of the Trusted.
In the Northern Tribe, Women are of marrying age at 16. Males who wish to marry females gift them with a traditional betrothal necklace. This signifies the woman is to be married. The ceremony is completely organized by the parents, and marriage of free choice is not practiced. However, in the Southern Tribe, it seems people are allowed to choose their own spouses.
Appearance:
Ethnically homogeneous, members of each tribe typical have blue or grey eyes, Light and deep brown hair sometimes black, and a light brown skin tone. Water tribe clothing is usually a set of blue anorak and trousers lined with white fur, accompanied by mittens and mukluks. Man may wear their hair long and half up or in short ponytails, also known as “Warrior’s Wolf Tails”. Women plant and braid their hair in many styles. Sometimes with beads, many spot “Hair Loopies”. In the Southern Tribe, Women have been shown wearing their hair in a bun with a decorative band. In the Northern Tribe, the men wear darker blue than those of the south, and royalty often wears purple. On the other hand, those of the “Foggy Swamp” Tribe wear simple greens and leafes.
The names of the Southern and Northern Tribes' citizens often include one or two "K"s and have an "ah" sound (Katara, Hakoda, Sokka, Pakku, Kya, Kuruk, Kanna, Arnook, Korra, Tarrlok, Yakone, Noatak, Eska, Varrick etc.), such as happens in Fire Nation with the letter "Z". However, this does not happen in the Foggy Swamp Tribe.
When Making a Water Tribe Character:
- Remember the deep culture and family roots.
- Style your character by what is normal for their culture, as Water Tribe Members are highly connected to their culture.
- Be spiritual, caring, and loving.
