The world has prospered. Crops are yielding more, animals are remaining healthy, and mineral deposits are rich. Each Nation has grown with this good luck, growing their power.
The Fire Nation has increased its military strength, as more and more young, able bodies are joining to protect and serve the homeland. The number of ships has multiplied, the fleets swelling with new members willing to patrol the seas around the Fire Nation. Firelord Liang is becoming one of the more popular leaders, a symbol of pride, honor, and power in her nation.
The Earth Kingdom has become the agricultural center of the world. Food is plentiful, and many who had previously been less fortunate have found their fortune, now able to feed and shelter their families. Earth King Ganshin is experiencing the best of this prosperity, but that does not mean he isn't sharing it. The nobles in Ba Sing Se are also enjoying it, feasting often.
The Water Tribe has remained mostly unaffected by the success of the rest of the world. The hostile environment and isolation of the poles has restricted their fortune. However, the larger Northern Tribe has become greater, their people having enough to live and grow. Chief Aarriak is proud of this accomplishment, prepared to lead his people to further greatness. The Southern Water Tribe, on the other hand, has experienced the opposite. Recent troubles in their waters have made fish scarcer, and quite a few are falling on hard times. Their chief, Unnuk, is doing his best, but his power is waning.
The Air Nomads are the only ones completely unchanged. Their isolated temples and monastic lifestyle has let them keep their pleasant lives of freedom and spirituality.
All of this was true, until the unthinkable happened during this Golden Age. Not war, not plague, but disaster hit. A large hurricane hit the Fire Nation archipelago, destroying villages and taking lives. Many have been left homeless, and plenty others have become refugees as opportunistic groups of brigands and pirates have attacked towns for their undefended wealth. Firelord Liang has reacted as an honorable leader would be expected to, mobilizing as many troops as she could to defend her people. However, some of their ships sank in the storm, and most others were damaged. Of all the troops available to her, most are being used to defend ports for the inevitable arrival of the larger army.
A lot of Fire Nation citizens, looking for people to blame for their new-found troubles, have pointed fingers at the Water Tribes and the Air Nomads. Firelord Liang, keeping the level-headedness that made her a popular leader, has recognized the lack of hostility from the Air Nomads. The Water Tribes, however, has been recognized as a significant threat previously, as the new Fire Nation navy could be wrongly seen as an act of aggression. While the hurricane being a random event is seen as a possible random event, hostilities between the Fire Nation and the Water Tribes have begun to grow.
